Arthritis Management


Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints caused when the particular cartilage which is a smooth covering on the ends of bones is worn down. It leads to a serious disability in the patients. it is commonly an age related disease but can sometimes be seen in children as well.
The different types of arthritis are:

· Osteoarthritis
· Rheumatoid arthritis
· Seronegative spondyloarthropathies
· Crytalline deposition diseases
· Septic arthritis

Causes

There are two major categories of arthritis:

· Caused by wearing and tearing of articular cartilage (osteoarthritis) as a result of natural ageing.
· Caused by any inflammatory process

With no regards to causes including injury, wear and tear or disease, the joints swell, stiffen and become inflamed causing prolonged or permanent disability.

Types

The different types of arthritis include:

Osteoarthritis –

Here the cartilage that covers the bone-ends wears away causing inflammation of joints which leads to swelling and pain. It is caused due to overuse or trauma and in age related degeneration of joint cartilage, the pain extends to

· Knee
· Hip
· Spine

Some other areas that are affected include:

· Joints damaged due to fractures and other injuries or those that have been in extensive use
· Other disorders that include overload of joint cartilage

Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is a long lasting disorder which slows as you age and affects many parts, mainly joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by the swelling of joint lining followed by its invasion of the surrounding tissues. Also, certain chemical substances are produced that destroy joint surfaces. It affects both large and small joints including spine. Symptoms include:

· Swelling
· Pain
· Stiffness

Medication

Include anti-inflammatory drugs used to control pain and inflammation. The prescription is based on following factors:

· Type
· Severity
· Physical health of patient

Injections in the joints can temporarily relieve pain and swelling.

Therapy Schedules

Using canes, crutches and other walking aides can help in relieving stress or strain on joints. Patients can also learn the specially demonstrated less stressful way of carrying out daily activities to decrease pain. Using exercises and physiotherapy can also help:

· To decrease stiffness
· Strengthen weak muscles around the joints

Surgery

The surgery is carried out by Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. L. Tomar after all other neurosurgical treatments have failed. Following factors need to be taken into account while deciding the type of surgery:

· Type of arthritis
· Severity
· Physical condition of the patient

The surgical procedures used to provide relief include:

· Using arthroscopy to remove diseased or damaged lining of joint
· Realigning joints
· Total joint replacement

Long-term Management

In maximum cases the arthritis patients are later on able to carry out their day to day activities normally. Some common measures that the arthritis patients need to follow to reduce pain, stiffness in the joints and improve functioning of the joints are:

· Carrying out daily exercise programs
· Taking Anti-inflammatory drugs regularly
· The obese patients must see to it that they reduce weight.
